I Can’t Hold Back is the new release from remixer The Hitmaker. The song, which was a hit for Survivor in 1984, was remade for these mixes featuring the terrific Allan Rust (The Blenders) on vocals, Todd Sucherman (Styx, Brian Wilson) on drums, and Nicholas Markos on guitar and bass. The results are a club-ready dance remix, a pop-radio remix, and even an orchestral acoustic mix.
“I never though anyone could make like a Survivor song,” is what chart-topping songwriter Glen Burtnik said the first time he called The Hitmaker on the phone (to ask him to remix a song for Burtnik’s Welcome to Hollywood album). This is the type of reaction many listeners had to the remixes on The Hitmaker’s bootleg collection Nice Hits 2.0--songs they thought they knew and even thought they disliked had been not only remixed, but reinvented, such that they heard them in a whole knew way. “My goal,” says The Hitmaker, “is to extract the essence of the song--whether it’s the distinctive chord changes, a melodic hook, or a guitar riff--and highlight that essence in a new context. People can then enjoy these songs and those elements, free of any previous hang-ups.”
I Can’t Hold Back is the latest in a series of official commercial releases from The Hitmaker that started with Don’t Stop Believin’, which featured Deen Castronovo of Journey on lead vocals. Upcoming releases include a collaboration with Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon. “I know that these songs still resonate with people, can inspire, and in some cases serve as secret personal anthems. I’m highlighting those special elements, while also updating and surrounding them with new musical framing.”
I Can’t Hold Back was mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer (and Tie Records International founder) Marcos Sueiro.
